What is Responsive Web Design and why do I want it?

Back in the day if you wanted your website to "present well" on mobile devices such as phones and tablets, you needed to pay a seperate cost to have them specially designed for phones and tablets. Thanks to new technologies you no longer need to go this rout. Rather, you can have your website built and have it "respond" to whatever device is viewing it. Responsive web design is a technique for building websites that work on mobile devices, tablets, and desktop screens. Not long ago, websites were typically designed specifically for laptop and desktop screen resolutions. This worked fine until the advent of web capable smart phones and tablets.

What does this mean for you? While designing your website, we now have the ability to turn off and on (hide) certain sections / areas of your website that you do not want to show on phones or tablets (smaller screen sizes) and the rest of the content that you DO want to show will now "adapt" to the screen size that is viewing it. (see example pictures below)

Responsive Web Design Example

“Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water.  Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup;  You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle;  You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash.  Be water, my friend.”
